USCAP 2025 Recap

Boston, MA

Boston, MA – 2025 USCAP Meeting Recap

USCAP made its way to Boston in 2025—and what a meeting it was! The historic charm of the “Hub of the Universe” set the perfect stage for a week packed with science, camaraderie, and more than a few bowls of authentic New England clam chowder. And yes, we ate our fair share of lobster—because when in Boston, you simply have to.

The headline of the meeting: the final consensus on myocarditis in both large specimens and endomyocardial biopsies was officially finalized! Years of spirited debate culminated in the creation of the brand-new “Seaport Myocarditis Criteria,” a name chosen in honor of the Boston Seaport district where the hard work came together. This landmark replaces the old Dallas Criteria and—fingers crossed—will slowly win global adoption as the new standard.

As if that milestone weren’t enough, we also hosted our first-ever Pericardial Diseases consensus meeting, led by Dr. Carmela Tan and Dr. E. Rene Rodriguez., marking the start of another exciting chapter in cardiovascular pathology.

The scientific sessions were stellar, the presenters inspiring, and the energy electric. A special highlight was the Distinguished Achievement Award ceremony honoring Dr. Cristina Basso. Surrounded by colleagues and friends, she was clearly moved by the heartfelt tributes and the warm celebration of her extraordinary contributions.

Leadership passed seamlessly as Dr. Giulia d’Amati took the helm as our new president, while Dr. Joe Malazheski stepped down after an exceptional term—thank you, Joe, for your remarkable leadership and vision.

Next stop: San Antonio, Texas, in 2026! Get ready to trade clam chowder for brisket and lobster rolls for barbecue—because everything (including the science and the fun) really is bigger in Texas.

USCAP 2024 Recap

Baltimore, MD

Baltimore, MD – 2024 USCAP Meeting Recap

USCAP made its way to Baltimore in 2024, and let’s just say the weather was… well, Baltimore. We had our fair share of sun, clouds, and a bit of a chill—enough to make you question your jacket choice at least once a day. But it was the perfect backdrop for a fantastic meeting filled with science, controversy, laughs, and, of course, a healthy dose of good-natured banter.

The main event of the meeting was the intense myocarditis session, where we gathered to discuss and revise the current Dallas Criteria. If you’ve ever been in a room full of experts with conflicting opinions, you know the vibe: passion in every word, disagreements on every point, and controversy practically dripping from the air. But somehow, despite the occasional firestorm, everyone behaved themselves, and progress was made. Kudos to everyone involved for making headway on such a complicated issue. And, just when it seemed like the heated debates might never end, the meeting concluded with… cake! Yes, cake. Man, oh man, cardiovascular pathologists really know how to have fun!

The real show, however, came during the roast of Dr. E. Rene Rodriguez, who was receiving the Distinguished Achievement Award. We all know he loves to keep up the tough exterior, but as the jokes kept coming, it was clear: the man has a heart—and not just in the clinical sense. When the humor started to turn heartfelt, it was impossible not to notice the misty eyes and the big smile. Let’s be real, no one can hold it together when you’re surrounded by that much love (and the occasional teasing). It was emotional and sweet—definitely a highlight of the evening.

All in all, Baltimore 2024 was a huge success. The scientific discussions were top-notch, the food was fantastic, and the weather… well, it wasn’t exactly California, but we made the best of it.

And just like that, we’ve already got our eyes set on the next USCAP meeting. The 2025 SCVP Companion Meetings will be in Boston, MA. We look forward to seeing many of you in the historic “Hub of the Universe”!

USCAP 2023 Recap

New Orleans, LA

USCAP returned to the Bayou in 2023.  The weather was pleasant, the food was delicious, and the meeting was wonderful. It was great to be at a time of normalcy and comaraderie was high. The venues for our meetings were unique in that we spent an afternoon at the Tulane Medical School building and had dinner at Brennan’s restaurant, home of Bananas Foster.

Our SCVP Distinguished Awardee, John Veinot, gave a rousing speech and we congratulated Liang Lu as our Young Investigator Awardee. There was also a change in leadership as Marc Halushka passed the baton to Joe Maleszewski to lead the SCVP for the next two years.

The 2024 SCVP Companion meetings will be headed to Baltimore, MD. We look forward to seeing many of you in the “City that reads.”
